Educational tours are available for schools and other student groups. Students learn about the workings of Parliament by visiting significant parts of Parliament Buildings with trained Education Services staff.

About educational tours

Educational tours of Parliament are interactive, student-centred tours of Parliament Buildings that last for 90 minutes. They provide students of all ages with the chance to experience the rich social and political history of New Zealand’s Parliament from the perspective of the present day.

Where possible, we arrange for students to visit:

  • a select committee room
  • the Parliamentary Library
  • the debating chamber of the House of Representatives
  • the Legislative Council Chamber
  • the Grand Hall.

Meet a member of Parliament

Electorate members of Parliament can be available to meet with students when their schedules allow. Let the Education Services team know if you would like your group to meet their member of Parliament as part of their visit.

Visit the House in session

If you want your visit to include sitting in the public gallery to watch the House in session, make sure you book your tour for a scheduled House sitting day. Education Services staff can help you with this. To see House sitting days use the link..

Group size

The maximum group size is 42. Larger groups can be accommodated by arranging two tours. Standard adult to student ratios apply.

Planning and booking your visit

Education Services can tailor and manage all aspects of your visit experience. Bookings are essential. Contact Education Services in the early stages of your planning so we can find the best dates possible for your visit and help you meet your learning objectives. Download a booking request form from the Downloads panel on this page. We also provide a risk assessment management (RAMs) form and student behaviour guidelines to support your planning.
