Māori Affairs Committee Room — Māui Tikitiki-a-Taranga

The Māori Affairs Committee Room, ’Māui Tikitiki-a-Taranga’, dates from 1995. It is the largest select committee room in Parliament House and is decorated in appropriate style to mark its significance within Parliament.

Carvers and weavers from throughout the country contributed to its impressive carved main entrance, and the scroll paintings on the rafters, and the ornamental panels and carvings in the room.

The Māori members decided that the room should be decorated on a ‘four winds’ basis rather than reflecting any one tribal style. All tribes are represented in the room through stories and symbols.

The room was blessed at a dawn ceremony before the official reopening of Parliament House by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 2 November 1995.
