Activities, competitions and a quiz, the chance to dress up and sit on a replica Speaker’s chair and the opportunity to try out Parliament’s interactive website will all help keep children entertained at this year’s Parliament Open Day.
Chris Tracey, Parliament’s Manager Visitor and Support Services, says more child friendly activities will help make the day fun for parents and their children.
“It’s a really big venue and there’s a lot to see. Activity breaks along the way or the opportunity to sit and listen to the live band over coffee and some treats will help visitors pace their visit,” says Chris.
Parliament’s Open Day features a host of historical and cultural displays. There will be special displays marking the Parliamentary Library’s 150th anniversary as well as opportunities to walk through the most famous sections of Parliament such as the debating chamber, the Grand Hall and the Legislative Council Chamber.
Behind the scenes insights include a look into an MP’s office, the Prime Minister’s media briefing room (the BeehiveTheatrette) and the chance to check out the food on offer at the Parliament cafeteria.
“Open Day is a chance for people to take a self-guided, self-paced look behind the scenes of Parliament,” says Chris. The day particularly appeals to local families who leave the tours we run on other days of the year to tourists.”
Open Day is free and visitors will be admitted from 10 a.m. with last entry at 3.30 p.m.
Visitors should enter Parliament via the main forecourt off Molesworth Street. All visitors will be security screened and they will be required to check in large bags. Mobile phones and cameras must not be used within the buildings and no food or drink (except bottled water) is allowed inside. Parliament’s cafeteria will be open and mementos of the day can be purchased at the Parliament gift shop.
