Radio coverage of Parliament

In 1936 New Zealand became the first country in the world to broadcast Parliament on the radio regularly. Today, the Radio New Zealand (RNZ) AM Network broadcasts all sittings of Parliament nationwide from transmitters around the country. RNZ also provides a live audio stream on its website, and podcasts of question time (see related links).

RNZ has also introduced smartphone applications that allow listeners to follow Parliament on Apple and Android mobile devices. The RNZ iPhone App has been downloaded more than 50,000 times since it was introduced in 2011.

Additional to RNZ’s coverage are daily and weekly radio programmes about Parliament. Parliament Today, presented by Tom Frewen, summarises daily and weekly proceedings in the House and select committees. It is broadcast on radio and available online (see related links).
