Ministerial statement on Canterbury earthquake

In an unusual move, question time was put aside on Tuesday. The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon John Key, made a ministerial statement about the severe earthquake in Canterbury in the early hours of 4 September. The statement was followed by speeches from other party leaders. The parties by agreement did not lodge questions.

Parliament’s new Kaumātua is Rose White–Tahupārae from Wanganui who will manage the Māori component of all formal and important occasions, ceremonies, and events for the Speaker and his departments, the Office of the Clerk and the Parliamentary Service.

New security facilities at Parliament

New security and visitor entry facilities on the ground floor of Bowen House have been formally opened by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith. Bowen House is on the corner of Lambton Quay and Bowen Street in Wellington. It provides office space for many members of Parliament and parliamentary support staff.

New Select Committee Rooms

Parliament has opened a new multi-function facility, for use primarily as a venue for select committee meetings. Committee members and staff, officials, large numbers of submitters, the media, and the public can now be accommodated without congestion.

New Standing Orders affect swearing-in of members

When a new Parliament is convened, members must be sworn in before they can sit or vote in the House. This is a legal requirement set out in the Constitution Act 1986. An oath or an affirmation, in either English or Māori, is administered by the Clerk of the House. The words are set out in the Oaths and Declarations Act 1957. Members are called in alphabetical order.
