New Kaumātua for Parliament appointed

Parliament’s new Kaumātua is Rose White–Tahupārae from Wanganui who will manage the Māori component of all formal and important occasions, ceremonies, and events for the Speaker and his departments, the Office of the Clerk and the Parliamentary Service.

Statues in Parliament grounds

For nearly one hundred years the large bronze statue of ‘King Dick’ (Premier Richard John Seddon) has dominated Parliament’s grounds, just as Seddon during his time as Premier (1893-1906) bestrode New Zealand politics.

Auckland Governance Legislation Committee established

The House has established a select committee to consider any legislation concerning the governance of Auckland that may be referred to it, and to report to the House on that legislation.. The Local Government (Auckland Council) Bill has been referred to the committee, for report by 4 September 2009.

The Budget

The Budget will be delivered in the House on Thursday, 28 May after 2 pm. The Budget sets out the Government's economic policies and plans for spending public money in the coming year. This is part of the appropriation process, through which Parliament approves such spending.

Display at Parliament to mark Queen's Birthday holiday

Five generations of the Royal Family have visited New Zealand over the last 130 years. The Queen’s baton and other gifts presented by the Royal Family will be on display in Parliament House during Queen’s Birthday Weekend and throughout June, and can be seen on a public tour of Parliament.

Hansard is providing a new service to meet the needs of individuals and organisations seeking rapid access to answers to oral questions.

Answers to oral questions to Ministers and members will now be published individually, rather than waiting until all twelve questions are completed.

Official visits to Parliament

Parliament welcomes a host of visitors - from the New Zealand public and schools wanting to understand more about democracy, to casual tourists in Wellington, to the many cruise ships that now call into port. But it provides a special welcome for distinguished visitors who come on matters of State such as the State visit by their Majesties King Juan Carlos 1 and Queen Sofia of Spain. When this happens many parliamentary staff, sometimes together with the Visits and Ceremonial Office of the Department of Internal Affairs, prepare for the event.

What is a Maiden Statement?

Most newly elected members make their first or “maiden” speech during the Address in Reply debate following the opening of Parliament. When vacancies arise during the course of a Parliament and new members are sworn in, those new members do not have any convenient debate in which to deliver the personal and wide-ranging address that is normally associated with a maiden speech.
