Visit by Samoan parliamentary delegation

From 31 March to 7 April the Speaker of the Samoan Legislative Assembly, the Hon La’auli Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, led a delegation of seven first-time Samoan members of Parliament to New Zealand.

Delegation members observed Parliament in action. They met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith, and the members of the Government Administration Committee. They also met with members of Parliament of Samoan descent.

The visit had special significance as 2012 marks the 50th anniversaries of Samoan independence and the signing of the Treaty of Friendship between New Zealand and Samoa.

Among other activities, the delegation was given a tour of the National Crisis Management Centre, which included a briefing on the Pacific tsunami alert system.
