Tāmaki Makaurau: Electoral Profile
The Tāmaki Makaurau electorate comprises Auckland City, parts of Waitakere City and Manukau City. Boundary changes have resulted in the southern part of Manurewa shifting to Hauraki-Waikato.
In 2006, only 3.5% of the Māori descent population was 65 years old or over, compared to 12.3% of the general population in New Zealand. Similarly, 4.7% of the Māori descent population received income support from New Zealand superannuation or a veteran's pension, compared to 13.9% of the general population. The largest occupational groups among those employed in 2006 were professionals (16.2%), clerical and administrative workers (14.5%), and managers (12.8%).
The winning candidate in the 2011 election, Pita Sharples (Māori Party), captured a plurality (40.4%) of the 17,622 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Tāmaki Makaurau electorate. The seat was also held in 2008 by Pita Sharples (Māori Party) with a margin of 7,540. The Labour Party captured a plurality (41.5%) of the party votes in Tāmaki Makaurau, down 8.2 percentage points on its party vote share in 2008. Turnout (total votes cast as a proportion of enrolled electors) in 2011 was 54.8%.
