1869 (2003). Dr Muriel Newman to the Associate Minister of Social Services and Employment (17 Mar 2003): How many prisoners had their benefits cancelled due to imprisonment year by year for the last 3 years, specified by benefit type, age, gender, ethnicity and prison?
Hon Rick Barker (Associate Minister of Social Services and Employment) replied: Please see attached tables. Please note The attached table shows benefit status immediately prior to imprisonment, it does not show benefit status at time of offending or arrest as no such information is available. Arrest for an offence will frequently impact on employment status. For example, if a worker is arrested for theft as a servant they are likely to be dismissed and therefore will move from being an employee to a beneficiary prior to imprisonment. This is likely to substantially inflate the number of people identified as receiving a benefit immediately prior to imprisonment.
