4672 (2012). Hon Phil Goff to the Minister of Foreign Affairs (08 Jun 2012): What reports, if any, has he or his Ministry received relating to the safety of any ferry service in Tonga in the last two years and what did those reports say?
Hon Murray McCully (Minister of Foreign Affairs) replied: Following the sinking of the Ashika ferry on 05 August 2009, a report was prepared by the Transport Accident Investigation Commission for the Royal Commission of Inquiry. It was released on 15 February 2010 and highlighted issues of poor maintenance and operation of the Ashika. It made a series of recommendations that were accepted by the Tonga Ministry of Transport in September 2011.
