The Speaker informed the House that Hon Nick Peniai, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, was within the precincts of the Chamber.

The visiting Speaker was welcomed with applause and accorded a seat on the left of the Chair.

2. Government motion

Death of Head of State of Samoa

Resolved, That this House notes with sadness the death of His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II, Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa; that it extends its condolences to his family and the people of Samoa at this time; and looks forward to continuing good relations with Samoa.

Members stood and observed a period of silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa.

Ballot for Members’ bills

  • By leave, agreed that, notwithstanding Standing Order 277(1), if,
(i) whenever the Clerk is to conduct a ballot under Standing Order 277(2), or
(ii) on a Wednesday on which Government orders of the day take precedence,

it appears that there will not be four orders of the day for the first readings of Members’ bills available for consideration at the next Wednesday’s sitting at which Members’ orders of the day take precedence, the Clerk may accept notices for the introduction of Members’ bills so as to bring the number of orders available that day up to four.
