Prayers

1. Message from Governor-General

The Speaker announced receipt of a message from His Excellency the Governor-General dated 31 July 2009 consenting to the passage of the Eden Park Trust Amendment Bill insofar as it affects the rights and prerogatives of the Crown.

2. Select committee reports

The presentation of two reports was announced.

The following bills were set down for second reading:

  • Student Loan Scheme (Repayment Bonus) Amendment Bill
  • Sentencing (Offender Levy) Amendment Bill

3. Introduction of bills

The introduction of the—

  • Crimes (Provocation Repeal) Amendment Bill
  • Student Loan Scheme (Exemptions and Miscellaneous Provisions) Amendment Bill—

was announced and the bills were set down for first reading.

Twelve questions to Ministers were answered.

Road User Charges Amendment Bill

The House resumed the interrupted debate on the question, That the Road User Charges Amendment Bill be now read a second time.

The bill was read a second time and set down for Committee stage next sitting day.

Limitation Bill

The Limitation Bill was read a first time and stood referred to a select committee.

Resolved, That the Justice and Electoral Committee consider the bill (Hon Christopher Finlayson).

Search and Surveillance Bill

Hon Simon Power moved, and the question was proposed, That the Search and Surveillance Bill be now read a first time.

On the question, That the bill be now read a first time, the votes were recorded as follows:

The Speaker informed the House that a parliamentary delegation from the House of Representatives of the Federation of Malaysia led by the Honourable Datuk Ronald Kiandee, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, was within the precincts of the Chamber.

The delegation was welcomed with applause.

The Leader of the House made a statement relating to the business of the House.

Ferry tragedy in Tonga

Resolved, That this Parliament express its sympathy and concern to the people of Tonga as search and rescue efforts continue following an overnight ferry sinking (Hon Bill English).
