Prayers

1. Introduction of distinguished visitor

The Speaker informed the House that a delegation from the Scottish Parliament, led by Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson, was within the precincts of the Chamber.

The delegation was welcomed with applause, and the Presiding Officer accorded a seat on the left of the Chair.

2. Member’s motion

Resolved, That the House express its deep sadness in respect to a great surviving old lady of Ngāti Porou East Coast who has passed away, Mate Huatahi Kaiwai, who was 94 years old; this woman was a strong supporter of youth and of our Māori language; she was patron of her school, Hukarere, and a figurehead of the Māori Language Commission and of all other organisations that supported the revival of the Māori language; the nation and Māoridom grieve for the loss of this woman, the daughter of Sir Apirana Ngata (Hon Parekura Horomia).

5. Select committee reports

The presentation of three reports was announced.

7. Debate on a matter of urgent public importance

The Speaker informed the House that he had accepted an application to debate a matter of urgent public importance.

Hon Phil Goff moved (for the purpose of debating the Cabinet decision to support a joint bid from the Māori Television Service, TVNZ, and TV3 for free-to-air television broadcasting rights for the Rugby World Cup 2011), That the House take note of a matter of urgent public importance.

The motion lapsed.

8. Urgency

Hon Gerry Brownlee moved a motion to accord urgency to certain business.
