Auckland Governance Legislation

  • The committee met on 18 August to continue considering the Local Government (Auckland Council) Bill.
  • The committee intends to meet next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to consider the Local Government (Auckland Council) Bill.

Commerce

  • The committee met on 20 August to hear evidence the Patents Bill and to consider its briefing on finance company failures.
  • The committee will next meet on 27 August to hear evidence the Patents Bill and to consider its briefing on finance company failures.

Education and Science

  • On 19 August the committee visited GNS Science at Avalon and Gracefield, Lower Hutt.

Emissions Trading Scheme Review

  • The committee met this week on 19 and 20 August, to consider the review of the emissions trading scheme.

Finance and Expenditure

  • The committee met on 19 August to hear evidence on the Methodist Church of New Zealand Trusts Bill, the Report from the Controller and Auditor-General on The Auditor-General’s views of setting financial reporting standards for the public sector, and to consider the Taxation (Consequential Rate Alignment and Remedial Matters) Bill.
  • It will next meet on 26 August to hear evidence on the Taxation (Consequential Rate Alignment and Remedial Matters) Bill, and continue its consideration of other items of business before it.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade

  • The committee met on 20 August to consider and hear submissions on the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Bill, and consider the Trade Marks (International Treaties and Enforcement) Amendment Bill.
  • The committee meets next week on 24 August to consider and hear submissions on the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Bill, and again on 27 August to consider the Trade Marks (International Treaties and Enforcement) Amendment Bill and the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism Bill.

Health

  • The committee met on 19 August when it resumed consideration of petition 2008/1 of Sally Fisher and petition 2008/9 of Juliet Pratt and heard from the Law Commission on the regulatory framework for the sale and supply of liquor. The committee also heard evidence about health promotion, disease, and injury prevention in relation to children.
  • The committee will next meet on 26 August when it will resume consideration of petitions 2008/1 of Sally Fisher and 2008/9 of Juliet Pratt and of the inquiry into early detection and treatment of prostate cancer.

Justice and Electoral

  • The committee met on 20 August, when it considered the Legal Services Amendment Bill, the Criminal Investigations (Bodily Samples) Amendment Bill, the Sale and Supply of Liquor and Liquor Enforcement Bill, and the petition of Kristine Hayward and Margaret L. Sale and 1,305 others, the Limitation Bill, and the Crimes (Provocation Repeal) Amendment Bill.
  • The committee also considered the Privacy (Cross-border Information) Amendment Bill, the inquiry into the 2008 general election, the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Bill, and petition 2008/26 of Vince Siemer and 100 others.
  • The committee does not intent to meet on 27 August or during the following adjournment week.

Local Government and Environment

  • The committee met on 20 August to receive a briefing from the Office of the Auditor-General on the Report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Local Government: Results of the 2007/08 audits, and to consider the Palmerston North Showgrounds Act Repeal Bill, the Franklin District Council (Contribution to Funding of Museums) Amendment Bill, and two petitions.
  • The committee will not meet next week.

Māori Affairs

  • The committee next meets on 26 August to consider its briefing on Māori educational achievement and its inquiry into the operation of the Maori Community Development Act 1962 and related issues. It will also consider the Maori Commercial Aquaculture Claims Settlement (Regional Agreements) Amendment Bill, and the petition of Peter Henry Edward Bloomer.

Primary Production

  • This week the committee considered the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill and the Aquaculture Legislation Amendment Bill (No 2).
  • Next week the committee will continue its consideration of both bills.

Regulations Review

  • The committee met on 20 August to consider recently promulgated statutory and deemed regulations, the complaint regarding the Marine Safety Charges Amendment Regulations 2008, and regulation-making powers in various bills.
  • The committee will next meet on 27 August to consider recently promulgated statutory and deemed regulations, the complaint regarding Clause 61 (Fees) of the Medicines Regulations 1984, and regulation-making powers in the Regulatory Impact Bill.

Social Services

  • The committee met this week on 19 August to consider the Social Assistance (Payment of New Zealand Superannuation and Veteran’s Pension Overseas) Amendment Bill, the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill, and the Unit Titles Bill.

Transport and Industrial Relations

  • At its meeting on 20 August the committee considered the Land Transport (Enforcement Powers) Amendment Bill and the Vehicle Confiscation and Seizure Bill. At its next meeting on 27 August the committee will consider these two bills further.
