Commerce

The committee met on 1 July to consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Commerce, Vote Energy, Vote Economic Development, Vote Communications, Vote Tourism, and Vote Consumer Affairs.

The committee will next meet on 22 July to hear evidence on the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Bill, and the Securities Trustees and Statutory Supervisors Bill.

Education and Science

The committee met on 30 June to further consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Education, Vote Education Review Office, Vote Crown Research Institutes, and Vote Research, Science and Technology. The committee also considered the petitions of Hans Kriek, Paul Maggs, Wendy Roche, and William Michael Courtney.

The committee will next meet on 21 July.

Electoral Legislation

The committee met on 30 June to hear evidence on the Electoral Referendum Bill, and the Electoral (Finance Reform and Advance Voting) Amendment Bill. It also met on 1 July to hear evidence on the Electoral Referendum Bill.

Finance and Expenditure

The committee met on 30 June to consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Finance, Vote State Services, and Vote Revenue.

The committee will next meet on 21 July to consider the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on The Auditor-General’s views on setting financial reporting standards for the public sector, and other items of business before it.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade

The committee met on 1 July to consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Veterans’ Affairs - Defence Force, Vote Veterans’ Affairs - Social Development, Vote Foreign Affairs and Trade, Vote Official Development Assistance, Vote Defence, and Vote Defence Force, and the Tariff (New Zealand-Hong Kong, China Closer Economic Partnership Agreement) Amendment Bill. It considered international treaty examinations of the Convention on Jurisdiction, Applicable Law, Recognition, Enforcement and Co-operation in respect of Parental Responsibility and Measure for the Protection of Children; the Exchange of Letters between New Zealand and Australia Constituting an Agreement to Amend Article 3 of the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement (“ANZCERTA”); and the Agreement to Amend the Product Specific Rules in Annex G of the ANZCERTA. The committee also heard evidence on its briefing from the Partners Relief and Development Agency.

The committee met on 30 June to hear evidence on the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Arts, Culture and Heritage. The committee also considered the Christ’s College (Canterbury) Amendment Bill, the Rugby World Cup 2011 (Empowering) Bill, the petition of Anton Michael Hyman, and the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Parliamentary Service, Vote Office of the Clerk, Vote Internal Affairs, Vote Ministerial Services, Vote Sport and Recreation, Vote Emergency Management, Vote National Archives, Vote National Library, Vote Ombudsmen, Vote Pacific Island Affairs, Vote Prime Minister and Cabinet, Vote Racing, Vote Statistics, and Vote Women’s Affairs.

Health

The committee met on 30 June to hear evidence on the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Performance audits from 2008: Follow-up report. It also considered the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Amendment Bill, the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Health, and its inquiry into early detection and treatment of prostate cancer.

The committee will next meet on 21 July.

Justice and Electoral

The committee met on 1 July to hear evidence on the visit of His Excellency Mr Uong Chu Luu, Vice President of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. It also considered the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Justice, Vote Attorney-General, Vote Parliamentary Counsel, and Vote Courts, the Trans-Tasman Proceedings Bill, the Child and Family Protection Bill, the Limitation Bill, and the petition of Jane Prichard and 46 others.

The committee will next meet on 22 July.

Law and Order

The committee met on 30 June to consider and hear evidence on the Electoral (Disqualification of Convicted Prisoners) Amendment Bill, to consider the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Response of the New Zealand Police to the Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct: First monitoring report, and the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Department of Corrections: Managing offenders on parole. It also further considered the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Corrections, Vote Police, and Vote Serious Fraud.

The committee will next meet on 21 July to hear further evidence on the Electoral (Disqualification of Convicted Prisoners) Amendment Bill.

Local Government and Environment

The committee met on 1 July to consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Local Government, Vote Environment, Vote Conservation, Vote Climate Change, and Vote Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment. It also considered the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill, and began hearing evidence on the bill.

The committee will next meet on 22 July to hear further evidence on the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill.

Māori Affairs

The committee met on 30 June to consider and hear further evidence on the inquiry into the tobacco industry in Aotearoa and the consequences of tobacco use for Māori. It also considered the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Māori Affairs, and Vote Treaty Negotiations.
