Commerce
On Thursday, the committee further considered the Business Law Reform Bill and the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Bill. Next week the committee will continue its consideration of these bills and finish hearing submissions on the two members’ bills relating to shop trading during Easter.
Education and Science
The committee met on 27 September to hear evidence concerning the planning of new schools in the Flatbush area of Auckland. It also heard evidence on its inquiry into making the schooling system work for every child from Group Special Education, representatives of vocational training providers, and from representatives of Sport Otago.
At its next meeting, on 11 October, the committee will hear evidence concerning its inquiry from Professor Gail Gillon of the University of Canterbury.
Finance and Expenditure
The committee met this week in Christchurch to hear further evidence on the Taxation (Annual Rates, Savings Investment, and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill. It meets next week on 11 October to continue its consideration of the tax bill and the Telecommunications Amendment Bill.
Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade
The committee did not meet this week and will next meet on 12 October when it will consider the Human Rights (Women in Armed Forces) Amendment Bill, the Customs and Excise Amendment Bill (No 2), and three treaties: the Exchange of letters constituting an agreement to amend article 3 of the Australia New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement; the Accession to the Nice Agreement; and the Protocol relating to the Madrid Agreement. It will also spend time considering the 2005/06 financial reviews.
Government Administration
The committee did not meet this week.
It will meet again on 11 October to consider the Law Reform (Epidemic Preparedness) Bill, the Rotorua Library Trust Fund Variation Bill, and the 2005/06 financial review examinations.
Health
At its meeting on 4 October the Health subcommittee heard evidence in Auckland on the Inquiry into Obesity and Type Two Diabetes. At its next meeting on 11 October the committee will continue hearing evidence on the inquiry.
Justice and Electoral
The committee met on Thursday morning to further its consideration of the Crimes (Abolition of Force as a Justification for Child Discipline) Amendment Bill. On Thursday afternoon the subcommittee considering the Evidence Bill also met.
On 12 October the committee will continue consideration of these two bills, and hear evidence on the New Zealand Bill of Rights (Private Property Rights) Amendment Bill, a member’s bill introduced by Gordon Copeland. The hearing of evidence will be open to the public. The committee will be meeting in select committee meeting room 2, which is located on the ground floor of Bowen House.

Māori Affairs
The Māori Affairs Committee did not meet this week.
The committee will meet on 11 October to consider the Māori Purposes Bill and the Ngāti Mutanga Claims Settlement Bill.
Primary Production
The Primary Production Committee did not meet this week.
The committee will meet on 9 October to consider the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association Empowering Bill, and on 12 October to consider the 2005/06 financial reviews and Petition 2005/72 of Andrew and Rachel Wharry.
Regulations Review
The committee did not meet this week.
Social Services
The committee will next meet on 11 October to further its consideration of the Weathertight Homes Resolution Services Amendment Bill and the inquiry into the quality and care of services provision for disabled people and how they might be improved.
Transport and Industrial Relations
The committee met on 5 October to hear evidence on the Employment Relations (Probationary Employment) Amendment Bill. The committee will next meet on 12 October in Wellington to continue hearing evidence on the Employment Relations (Probationary Employment) Amendment Bill.
