Commerce

The committee met on 27 May to consider the 2010/11 Estimates, and the Financial Service Providers (Pre-Implementation Adjustments) Bill.

Next week the committee will meet on 2 and 3 June to further consider the Financial Service Providers (Pre-Implementation Adjustments) Bill

Education and Science

The committee met on 26 May to continue hearing evidence on the Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill. The committee also considered the 2010/11 Estimates, as well as the petitions of Dr Muriel Newman, Aaron Gilmore, Sue Kedgley, Maryan Street, Damien O’Connor and Kathryn Sclater, and the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Ministry of Education: Managing support for students with high special educational needs. The committee also further considered a number of briefings before it.

The committee will next meet on 2 June to hear evidence on the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Education, Vote Education Review Office, Vote Crown Research Institutes, and Vote Research, Science and Technology. The committee will also further consider the petitions of Aaron Gilmore, Sue Kedgley, and Hans Kriek.

Electoral Legislation

The committee met on 27 May to consider the Electoral (Finance Reform and Advance Voting) Amendment Bill and the Electoral Referendum Bill.

The committee will not be meeting next week.

Finance and Expenditure

The committee met 26 May to consider the Electricity Industry Bill, the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Bill, and other items of business before it.

It will next meet on 2 June to hear evidence on the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote State-Owned Enterprises, and to continue its consideration of other items of business before it.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade

The committee met on 27 May to consider the 2010/11 Estimates. It also considered its briefing from the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs, the Tariff (Malaysia Free Trade Agreement) Amendment Bill, its briefing on whaling, and the petition of Chris Carter.

The committee will next meet on 3 June to hear evidence on, and consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Customs.

Government Administration

The committee met on 26 May to consider the 2010/11 Estimates.

The committee will next meet on 2 June to consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Office of the Clerk, Vote Parliamentary Service, and Vote Sport and Recreation.

Health

The committee met on 26 May hear evidence on the inquiry into improving New Zealand’s environment to support innovation through clinical trial, and to consider the 2010/11 Estimates. The committee also considered the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (Storage) Amendment Bill, and heard evidence on the petition of Craig Cameron Jackson on behalf of the Working Party on Suicide and 2,518 others, and on its briefing from Dr Michael Tatley on the adverse reaction process.

The committee will next meet on 2 June to consider the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (Storage) Amendment Bill, and to hear evidence on its briefing from Professor Sir Peter Gluckman on how to improve completion rates of childhood immunisation. It will also hear evidence on the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Effectiveness of arrangements to check the standard of services provided by rest homes.

Justice and Electoral

The committee met on 25 May to consider the Courts (Remote Participation) Bill. It also met on 27 May to consider the Courts (Remote Participation) Bill, the Prisoners’ and Victims’ Claims (Expiry and Application Dates) Amendment Bill, the Child and Family Protection Bill, and the 2010/11 Estimates.

The committee will next meet on 3 June to hear evidence on the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Justice.

Law and Order

The committee met on 26 May to consider the petition of Karen Knight and 241 others, the Courts and Criminal Matters Bill, and the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Corrections, Vote Police, and Vote Serious Fraud. It also continued consideration of the Report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Department of Corrections: Managing offenders on parole, and concluded consideration of the Report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Response of the New Zealand Police to the Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct: First monitoring report.

The committee will not meet next week.

Local Government and Environment

The committee met on 27 May to hear evidence on the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Local authorities: Planning to meet the forecast demand for drinking water. It also considered the Public Works (Offer Back of and Compensation for Acquired Land) Amendment Bill, the 2010/11 Estimates, the report of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on Stockton revisited: The mine and the regulatory minefield, and the petitions of Alexander James Burrell and Marie Antoinette Burrell, and Gordon Currie on behalf of Nelson Grey Power.

The committee will next meet on 3 June to hear evidence on the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Local Government. It will also hear evidence from the Ministry for the Environment on the report of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on How clean is New Zealand? Measuring and reporting on the health of our environment.

Māori Affairs

The committee met on 26 May to hear evidence on the inquiry into the operation of the Maori Community Development Act 1962 and related issues. It also considered the inquiry into the financial performance and current operations of Māori Television Service for the financial year ending 30 June 2009, and the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Māori Affairs, and Vote Treaty Negotiations.

The committee will next meet on 2 June to hear evidence on the inquiry into the tobacco industry in Aotearoa and the consequences of tobacco use for Māori. This hearing will be open to the public. The committee will also consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Māori Affairs, and Vote Treaty Negotiations.

Primary Production

The committee met on 27 May to consider its briefing on agricultural education in New Zealand, the 2010/11 Estimates, and the petition of David Mark Wills.

Regulations Review

The committee met on 26 May to consider the complaint regarding New Zealand (Mandatory Fortification of Bread with Folic Acid) Amendment Food Standard 2009, and on 27 May to consider recently promulgated statutory and deemed regulations, and regulation-making powers in the Electoral Referendum Bill.

The committee will next meet on 3 June to consider recently promulgated statutory and deemed regulations, and consider regulation-making powers in the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill, and the Securities Trustees and Statutory Supervisors Bill.

Social Services

The committee met on 26 May to hear evidence on the Social Assistance (Future Focus) Bill, and to consider the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Community and Voluntary Sector, Vote Housing, Vote Senior Citizens, Vote Social Development, and Vote Youth Development.

The committee will next meet on 2 June, to hear further evidence on the Social Assistance (Future Focus) Bill, and to hear evidence on the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Senior Citizens, and Vote Housing.

Transport and Industrial Relations

The committee met on 27 May to consider the 2010/2011 Estimates, the Employment Relations (Workers’ Secret Ballot for Strikes) Amendment Bill, and to hear evidence on its briefing from the Ministry of Transport on truck crashes. The committee also considered further two petitions.

The committee will next meet on 3 June to hear evidence on the 2010/11 Estimates for Vote Immigration. It will also hear evidence on the Employment Relations (Workers’ Secret Ballot for Strikes) Amendment Bill, and a petition on immigration rights for recent migrants.
