The committee met on 22 October to hear evidence on the 2008/09 financial review of New Zealand Post Limited, and to consider the petition of John Andrew Dickson, the Radio New Zealand Amendment Bill, the Regulatory Improvement Bill, and the Patents Bill.

The committee will next meet on 29 October to hear evidence on the report of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on Smart electricity meters: How households and the environment can benefit, the 2008/09 financial review of the Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited, and to consider the 2008/09 financial review of the Securities Commission, the Patents Bill, and the Motor Vehicle Sales Amendment Bill.

Education and Science

The committee met on 21 October to hear evidence on the Education (Polytechnics) Amendment Bill and the Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill.

Finance and Expenditure

The committee met on 20 October to hear evidence on the Climate Change Response (Moderated Emissions Trading) Amendment Bill, 21 October to continue this hearing and to hear evidence on the 2008/09 financial review of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, and again on 2 October to hear evidence on the Climate Change Response (Moderated Emissions Trading) Amendment Bill.

The committee will next meet on 27 October to continue to hear evidence on the Climate Change Response (Moderated Emissions Trading) Amendment Bill, and on 28 October to consider the bill and other items of business before it.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade

The committee meet on 22 October to consider and hear submissions on the Antarctica (Environmental Protection: Liability Annex) Amendment Bill, and to consider the petition of Edwina Hughes, the briefing from the New Zealand Baha’i community, and its inquiry into New Zealand’s relationships with South Pacific countries.

The committee met on 22 October to hear evidence on the Public Works (Offer Back of and Compensation for Acquired Land) Amendment Bill and the Sustainable Biofuel Bill, and to consider three petitions relating to the location of cellphone towers. It also received a briefing on capital projects identified in 2009-18 long-term council community plans.

Māori Affairs

The committee did not meet this week.

The committee will next meet on 28 October to further consider its inquiry into the operation of the Māori Community Development Act 1962 and related issues, and its inquiry into the tobacco industry in Aotearoa and the consequences of tobacco use for Māori. It will also consider its inquiry into the financial performance and current operations of Māori Television Service for the year ending 30 June 2009, its briefing on Māori educational achievement and the petition of Peter Henry Edward Bloomer.

Primary Production

The committee did not meet this week.

The committee will next meet on 29 October to consider the 2008/09 financial of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Fisheries, Land Information New Zealand, the New Zealand Food Safety Authority, Animal Control Products, Landcorp Farming Limited, Quotable Value Limited, and the 2008/09 non-departmental appropriations for Control of TB Vectors, and Management of Crown Forestry Assets, and the petition of David Mark Wills. After the meeting the committee will undertake a site visit of the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Limited.

Social Services

The committee met this week to meet with a visiting delegation from the Scottish Parliament, led by Mr Alex Fergusson, Presiding Officer.

The committee will next meet on 28 October to consider the Children, Young Persons, and Their Families (Youth Courts Jurisdiction and Orders) Amendment Bill.

Transport and Industrial Relations

The committee met this week on 22 October to consider further the Infrastructure Bill and the Remuneration Authority Amendment Bill.
