Auckland Governance Legislation Committee
The committee met on 16 December to consider the Local Government (Auckland Law Reform) Bill. The committee called for public submissions on the bill with a closing date of Friday, 12 February 2010. Submissions can be made on the Parliament website. The committee expects to begin hearings of evidence in Auckland in late February 2010.
The committee will next meet when the House resumes sitting in early February.
Commerce
The committee met on 15 December to consider the petition of John Andrew Dickson, and the Radio New Zealand Amendment Bill.
Education and Science
The committee did not meet this week.

Finance and Expenditure
The committee met on16 December to consider the 2008/09 financial reviews, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s monetary policy statement, December 2009.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade
The committee met this week to hear evidence on and consider a briefing on Major Defence Acquisitions Projects 1 and 2, and to consider a briefing on the Tamil People in Sri Lanka, the petitions of Uma Naguleswaran, Mani Maniparathy, Dr Mei Meiyalaghan, Ramesh Manicavasagar, and Neil Ahilakumaran, and to consider its inquiry into New Zealand’s relationships with South Pacific countries.
The committee will next meet on 28 and 29 January 2010 to consider a briefing on the Tamil People in Sri Lanka, the petitions of Uma Naguleswaran, Mani Maniparathy, Dr Mei Meiyalaghan, Ramesh Manicavasagar, Neil Ahilakumaran, and Sinniah Ilanko, and its inquiry into New Zealand’s relationships with South Pacific countries.
Government Administration
The committee met on 16 December to hear evidence and consider the 2008/09 financial review of the Department of Internal Affairs. The committee also considered the 2008/09 financial review of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the Office of the Ombudsmen, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives, the Parliamentary Service, Statistics New Zealand, Sport and Recreation New Zealand, and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa Board.
The committee will meet in the New Year to consider the 2008/09 financial review of the Department of Internal Affairs, the State Services Commission, the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Archives New Zealand, and the Lotteries Commission.
Health
The committee met on 16 December to consider its inquiry into early detection and treatment of prostate cancer, and to hear evidence on the 2008/09 financial review of the Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand.
The committee will next meet on 10 February 2010.

The committee met on 16 December to hear evidence from the Department of Corrections on the 2008/09 financial review of the Department of Corrections.

The committee will next meet on 11 February 2010 to consider the 2008/09 financial review of the Ministry for the Environment, the Department of Conservation, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, and the non-departmental appropriations for the NZ Biodiversity Advisory Fund, Identification and Implementation of Protection for Natural and Historic Places, Sustainable Management Fund, Rotorua Lakes Restoration Programme, and Contaminated Sites Remediation Fund. It will also hear evidence on the 2008/09 financial review of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

The committee also considered the 2008/09 financial review of the Department of Building and Housing, and a number of other financial reviews.
