Auckland Governance Legislation

The committee met on 19 May to continue its consideration of the Local Government (Auckland Law Reform) Bill.

Commerce

The committee met on 20 May to hear evidence on the Financial Service Providers (Pre-Implementation Adjustments) Bill.

The committee will next meet on 27 May to consider the Financial Service Providers (Pre-Implementation Adjustments) Bill, and the 2010/11 Estimates.

Education and Science

The committee met on 19 May to hear evidence on the Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill. The committee also considered the petitions of Dr Muriel Newman, Aaron Gilmore, Sue Kedgley, Maryan Street, Damien O’Connor, and Kathryn Sclater, as well as the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Ministry of Education: Managing support for students with high special educational needs.

The committee will next meet on 26 May to continue hearing evidence on the Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill. The committee met on 19 May to hear evidence on Supplementary Order Paper 121 on the Electricity Industry Bill, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s financial stability report, May 2010. It also met on 20 May 2010 to allocate examinations of 2010/11 Estimates to subject select committees.

It will next meet on 26 May to consider the Electricity Industry Bill, the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Bill, and other items of business before it.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade

The committee met on 20 May to consider its briefing from the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs, the Tariff (Malaysia Free Trade Agreement) Amendment Bill, its briefing on Whaling, and the petition of Chris Carter. It also considered its inquiry into New Zealand’s relationships with South Pacific countries.

The committee will next meet on 27 May to consider the 2010/11 Estimates. The committee met on 19 May to hear evidence on the inquiry into how to improve completion rates of childhood immunisation, and the inquiry into improving New Zealand’s environment to support innovation through clinical trial. The committee also considered the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (Storage) Amendment Bill.

The committee will next meet on 26 May to further consider the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (Storage) Amendment Bill, and to hear further evidence on the inquiry into how to improve completion rates of childhood immunisation. It will also hear evidence on the petition of Craig Cameron Jackson.

Justice and Electoral

The committee met on 20 May to hear evidence on the Trans-Tasman Proceedings Bill. It also considered the Courts (Remote Participation) Bill, the Prisoners’ and Victims’ Claims (Expiry and Application Dates) Amendment Bill, and the petitions of Jane Prichard, and Ken Orr and 1,949 others.

The committee will next meet on 27 May to consider the Courts (Remote Participation) Bill.

Local Government and Environment

The committee met on 20 May to hear evidence on the report from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on How clean is New Zealand? Measuring and reporting on the health of our environment. The committee also considered the Public Works (Offer Back of and Compensation for Acquired Land) Amendment Bill, the report from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on Stockton revisited: The mine and the regulatory minefield, and a number of petitions.

The committee will next meet on 27 May to hear evidence on the report from the Controller and Auditor-General on Local authorities: Planning to meet the forecast demand for drinking water. It will also consider the Public Works (Offer Back of and Compensation for Acquired Land) Amendment Bill, the 2010/11 Estimates, and the petitions of Alexander James Burrell and Marie Antoinette Burrell, and Gordon Currie on behalf of Nelson Grey Power.

Māori Affairs

The committee met on 19 May to hear evidence on the inquiry into the tobacco industry in Aotearoa and the consequences of tobacco use for Māori.

The committee will next meet on 26 May to hear evidence on the inquiry into the operation of the Maori Community Development Act 1962 and related issues. This hearing will be open to the public. The committee will also consider the inquiry into the financial performance and current operations of Māori Television Service for the financial year ending 30 June 2009.
