Provisional results for the 2005 New Zealand general election

Executive summary

  • The election night results produced an overhang of 2 seats, making a total of 122 seats in the House. This was due to the Maori Party obtaining 1.98% of the party vote, but winning 4 electorate seats.
  • The number of Labour Party seats in the House decreased from 51 to 50.
  • The number of National Party seats in the House increased from 27 to 49.
  • The number of New Zealand First seats decreased from 13 to 7.
  • The number of Green Party seats decreased from 9 to 6.
  • The Maori Party retained the electorate of Te Tai Hauauru, and gained the Tamaki Makaurau, Waiariki and Te Tai Tokerau, electorates, increasing its total number of seats from 1 to 4.
  • United Future New Zealand retained the electorate seat of Ohariu-Belmont and 2 list seats, a decrease of 5 seats.
  • ACT New Zealand gained the electorate seat of Epsom, but its overall number of seats decreased from 9 to 2.
  • Jim Anderton's Progressive retained the electorate seat of Wigram, but lost 1 list seat.
  • Turnout rate for the 2005 election was 79%, compared to 77% for the 2002 election.
