How can I find out the name of my member of Parliament?

Go to the list of current members of Parliament. Display the list of MPs by Electorate. This will show you the name of the member who represents the electorate (voting area) where you live. This is your member of Parliament.

If you do not know the name of the electorate where you live, you can find out from the Electoral Commission website.

Your local telephone directory, under members of Parliament, may also be helpful.

How can I contact a member of Parliament?

You can contact members of Parliament at their offices in the parliamentary complex or at their out-of-Parliament or electorate offices.

When does the House of Representatives sit in session?

The House sitting programme shows the agreed sitting days for the House of Representatives.

Normal sitting hours are:

  • Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Do I need permission to have my wedding photographs taken in Parliament grounds?

Yes. It is an expected courtesy to ask the Speaker for permission before you take wedding photographs or film in Parliament grounds. You can ask for permission by email or in a letter.

Can I take photographs or film inside Parliament Buildings?

You must have the Speaker’s permission before you take photographs or film inside the Parliamentary Buildings. Personal filming or photography within the parliamentary grounds does not generally require permission. Filming or photography within the parliamentary grounds for business/commercial purposes does require prior approval by, or under the authority, of the Speaker.

Can I reproduce an image or photograph of Parliament Buildings for commercial purposes?

You may not reproduce any image or photograph of Parliament Buildings for commercial purposes. Images of Parliament buildings (the Parliamentary Library, Parliament House, and the Beehive) are protected by copyright.

Contact the Parliamentary Information Service to apply for permission to reproduce an image or photograph of Parliament Buildings.

Can I hold a function in Parliament Buildings?

Only members of Parliament may hold functions in parliamentary function venues. In order to do so they must first have the Speaker’s approval. The Speaker only approves the use of parliamentary function rooms for:

  • Official functions hosted by a Minister or a member.
  • Private or personal functions given by Ministers or members at their own expense.

Do I need permission to hold a protest in the grounds of Parliament?

Yes. Groups or individuals who want to hold a protest in Parliament grounds must have the Speaker’s permission. You must apply for the Speaker’s permission by email or in a letter.
