House and committee procedural guides

Effective House Membership and Effective Select Committee Membership are publications available to help members and other participants in parliamentary processes understand how Parliament works. They are also helpful to anyone in the wider public who would like to understand more about parliamentary procedure.

Effective House Membership assists members of Parliament, particularly those newly elected, in understanding their role as a member of the House of Representatives. The objective of the booklet is to help members to contribute effectively to the work of the House. Specific information is provided regarding how the House is managed and the processes associated with specific types of business including questions, bills and petitions.

Effective Select Committee Membership is an introduction to select committees. It discusses the various types of committee business, and gives basic procedural information regarding the scope and limitations of select committees.

Both booklets assist members of Parliament to interpret Standing Orders and understand the rationale behind them.
