Youth Parliament selection process is now open

The next Youth Parliament will be held on 16 and 17 July 2013. Youth Parliament is an opportunity for young New Zealanders to learn first-hand about New Zealand’s democracy, to influence government decision-making as active citizens and to have their views heard by key decision-makers and the general public.

Youth Parliament is as close as possible to the real thing. Youth MPs have the opportunity to debate legislation, sit on select committees and ask parliamentary questions of Cabinet Ministers. Youth Press Gallery members get the chance to report on the activities of the Youth MPs and make sure they are held accountable to the public.

Young people interested in becoming a Youth MP should contact a member of Parliament, and those interested in the Youth Press Gallery should contact the Ministry of Youth Development at

The closing date for applications is 5 April. However, as each member of Parliament runs their own selection process for Youth MPs some may have an earlier closing date, so it is important to apply as soon as possible. The Parliamentary Press Gallery will review applications and select the 10 Youth Press Gallery members.

The Ministry of Youth Development coordinates New Zealand’s Youth Parliament every 3 to 4 years. You can see further details via the related links on this page.
