Selwyn: Electoral Profile

General Notes

The Selwyn electorate was newly created in 2007 and replaces parts of the Waimakariri, Banks Peninsula and Rakaia electorates. With close to the average land area for general electorates, Selwyn extends from the Southern Alps to Akaroa, including all of Banks Peninsula. Its southern boundary is formed by the Rakaia River, while its northern border skirts Christchurch city and then follows the Waimakariri River.

The Selwyn electorate has seen twenty percent population growth between 2001 and 2006, two and a half times the national average. Among the general electorates in 2006, Selwyn ranked first (had the highest percentage) for: those who earned family income of between $70,001 and $100,000 (20.5%); people who were married (55.9%); households who owned their own home (77.8%).
