Helensville: Electoral Profile

General Notes

The Helensville electorate was newly created in 2002, following strong population growth in the Auckland region. It extends from Muriwai beach on the south west coast to South Head on the Kaipara Harbour, and represents the communities of Helensville, Kumeū, Whenuapai, Hobsonville, North Harbour and Albany.

Between the 2001 and 2006 censuses the usually resident population increased 19.0% to 63,246 – compared to an eight percent increase across New Zealand as a whole. Of households, about three-quarters (76.5%) are one-family households, 79.0% have access to a cellphone, and 43.1% of dwellings are owned with a mortgage – the highest proportion of any general electorate.

Election Results

The winning candidate in the 2011 election, John Key (National Party), captured a majority (74.4%) of the 34,971 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Helensville electorate. The seat was previously won in 2008 by John Key (National Party) with a margin of 20,547. The National Party captured a majority (65.8%) of the party votes in Helensville, up 2.1 percentage points on its party vote share in 2008. Turnout (total votes cast as a proportion of enrolled electors) in 2011 was 75.7%.
