Manukau East: Electoral Profile

General Notes

Substantial changes were made to the Manukau East electorate in 2007. The electorate's northern boundary has been extended past the Tāmaki River to almost as far as Sylvia Park Rd to now incorporate Middlemore, Otahuhu and Westfield. The electorate's eastern boundary has shifted west to East Tamaki Rd resulting in the loss of East Tāmaki and Botany Downs to the Botany electorate, but the retention of most of Otara. Papatoetoe West is also now included in the electorate.

Based on the new boundaries, Manukau East had the highest rate of unemployment in New Zealand in 2006 (5.6%), and the highest share of rental dwellings (46.8%) among general electorates. Of those aged 15 or over in 2006, the manufacturing industry employed the biggest share of the workforce (18.7%), followed by retail trade (8.9%), and transport, postal and warehousing (7.1%).
