The Education Centre in the Executive Wing (Beehive) is home to our exciting role play programme. This 90-minute programme is available to primary and intermediate school students and teachers.

About the role play programme

In this programme, students (Year 6–8) take part in legislative debate while playing the roles of the Speaker, members of Parliament, and other House officers. Students representing members from the Government and Opposition prepare speeches to reinforce their position and express their points of view during the third reading of a bill. This leads to a final vote.

This programme is a fantastic way for students to experience a little of what it means to be a member of Parliament in New Zealand, complete with costumes and props. Students learn about the lawmaking role and responsibilities of Parliament.

Group size

Maximum group size is 42, including teachers and accompanying adults.

Preparing for role play

Teachers need to do some very basic preparatory work with their students before their visit so that the role play programme is successful for them. We will send you all the information you need when you book a programme.
