New Zealand Parliament hosts study programme for Niuean members of Parliament

Last week a delegation from Niue visited New Zealand as part of a programme designed to increase awareness of good governance, strengthen relationships with New Zealand counterparts and better equip the members to represent Niue both domestically and internationally. The programme included briefings on parliamentary processes and New Zealand’s constitutional arrangements, and meetings with senior members of the New Zealand Parliament and officials from various ministries.

The Niuean members of Parliament attending the study programme were Hon Joan Viliamu, Mr Crossley Tatui, Mr Dalton Tagelagi, and Mr Stanley Kalauni.

Niue has a special constitutional relationship of free association with New Zealand which reflects the historical ties between the two countries. Niue is self-governing with the power to make its own laws, and the Niue Government has full executive powers. Niue is part of the Realm of New Zealand, with Niueans holding New Zealand citizenship and travelling on New Zealand passports.
