Several organisations work within the parliamentary precincts to support members of Parliament. The two parliamentary agencies are the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives and the Parliamentary Service. The three executive agencies are the Parliamentary Counsel Office, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Department of Internal Affairs’ Executive Government Support business unit.

Parliament has a long and enduring association with the game of rugby. Charles Monro, who introduced the game into the country in 1870, was the son of the second Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Sir David Monro. Charles Monro organised the first game of rugby ever in this country, held on 14 May 1870 at the Nelson Botanical Reserve.

A general election and a referendum on the voting system are expected to take place on 26 November. Before then, the current Parliament (the forty-ninth New Zealand Parliament) will come to an end. A new Parliament will meet no more than 6 weeks after the official election result has been announced.

On 9 August members of the territorial forces gathered at Parliament to commemorate the battle on the hill of Chunuk Bair at Gallipoli from 8 to 10 August 1915. Some 90 percent of the Wellington battalion, which took the hill and was led by Lieutenant Colonel William Malone, were killed or wounded during the desperate battle. Malone was himself killed.

Parliamentary Service Project Manager for Open Day, Chris Tracey, says there will be more displays and activities than ever before. “Our aim is to encourage people to participate in the democratic process and learn more about Parliament.”
