Dunedin North: Electoral Profile
Following boundary changes in 2007, the northern boundary of the Dunedin North electorate has been extended to include the northern coastal settlements of Waitati, Warrington, Karitane, and Waikouaiti. The southern boundary is formed by the Otago Harbour while the bulk of the central city and hill suburbs form the southwestern boundary.
The University of Otago, Dunedin College of Education and Otago Polytechnic lie within this electorate, together with the central health organisations for the region. In 2006, it had the highest proportion of any general electorate of: those aged 15-19 (14.1%); those on a student allowance (8.8%); those employed in the education and training industry (11.7%); and those employed in the health care and social assistance industry (12.3%).
The winning candidate in the 2008 election, Pete Hodgson (Labour Party), captured a majority (52.62%) of the 32,547 valid electorate votes cast for candidates in the Dunedin North electorate. The seat was also held in 2005 by Pete Hodgson (Labour Party) with a margin of 7,630. The Labour Party captured a plurality (44.24%) of the party votes in Dunedin North, down 10.6 percentage points on its party vote share in 2005. Turnout (total votes cast as a proportion of enrolled electors) in 2008 was 81.57%.
