ACT New Zealand in Parliament

ACT New Zealand first registered with the Electoral Commission in February 1995 and entered Parliament in 1996. From 2008-2011 ACT New Zealand had an agreement with the National-led government including two Ministers outside Cabinet. With a further agreement for this Parliament, the Hon John Banks is a Minister outside Cabinet in the National-led government from December 2011.

The party is currently represented in Parliament by one member, the Hon John Banks, who represents the Epsom electorate.

Agreement

‘ACT New Zealand agrees to provide confidence and supply through positive votes of support for the term of this Parliament to a National-led Government in return for National's agreement to the policy programme and other matters set out in this document.’

ACT New Zealand message

‘The principal object of the ACT Party is to promote an open, progressive and benevolent society in which individual New Zealanders are free to achieve their full potential. To this end the ACT Party upholds the following principles: that individuals are the rightful owners of their own lives and therefore have inherent rights and responsibilities; and that the proper purpose of government is to protect such rights and not to assume such responsibilities.’
