2495 (2010). Hon Darren Hughes to the Minister of Transport (19 Mar 2010): Will the Government consider upgrading State Highway Two from Napier to Gisborne to accommodate increased numbers of heavy trucks if it decides to mothball the Napier-Gisborne line, if so, what would be the estimated cost of such upgrading?
Hon Steven Joyce (Minister of Transport) replied: Consideration will be given to all impacts in making a decision on the future of the Napier-Gisborne line. A series of improvements is already programmed for State Highway 2 between Napier and Gisborne and has been identified in the National Land Transport Programme. The NZ Transport Agency does not have an estimate for the whole Napier to Gisborne SH2 route. However, there is a total of around $27 million programmed in the National Land Transport Programme to be spent on this route from 09/10 to 11/12. One of the major roading improvements between Napier and Wairoa is the Matahorua Gorge realignment which has an estimated value of $30 million.
