5891 (2012). Hon David Cunliffe to the Minister for Primary Industries (01 Aug 2012): Has the Ministry for Primary Industries calculated the economic impact to Auckland as a result of the exclusion zone to contact the Queensland fruit fly; if so, what was the impact; if not, why not?
Rt Hon David Carter (Minister for Primary Industries) replied: The Ministry for Primary Industries has not undertaken any formal assessment of the economic impact to Auckland of the Controlled Area Notice declared during the Queensland fruit fly response. Any person who has suffered verifiable losses as a result of the restrictions imposed by the Controlled Area Notice is entitled to compensation for that loss. All known businesses in the Controlled Area selling fruit and vegetables were directly informed of this and the information was also notified on MPI’s website. The most efficient way to determine the economic impact of the Controlled Area Notice is through the compensation claims received from those directly impacted. This process has not yet been completed as not all claims have been received.
