Prayers

1. Death of former member

The Speaker advised the House of the death on 3 June 2012 of Rt Hon Sir Brian Edward Talboys, CH, KCB, AC.

The Speaker expressed on behalf of the House the sense of loss sustained and sympathy with the relatives of the late former member, and members stood and observed a period of silence as a mark of respect to his memory.

6. Application to debate matter of urgent public importance

The Speaker notified the House that Andrew Little had indicated his desire to move, That the House take note of a matter of urgent public importance, for the purpose of debating the Government’s reaction to the determination by the Police on a complaint made by ACC about a meeting between Ms Bronwyn Pullar, Ms Michelle Boag, and ACC officials on 1 December 2011, and the ongoing privacy issues that have been highlighted.

The Speaker informed the House that he had declined the application.

The Speaker also notified the House that Hon Nanaia Mahuta had indicated her desire to move, That the House take note of a matter of urgent public importance, for the purpose of debating the Government’s decision to reverse Budget changes to teacher–pupil funding ratios.

1. Introduction of distinguished visitors

The Speaker informed the House that a parliamentary delegation from the Chamber of Deputies of the Republic of Italy, led by Hon Emerenzio Barbieri, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Italy–New Zealand Friendship Group, was within the precincts of the Chamber.

The delegation was welcomed with applause.

4. Debate on matter of urgent public importance

The Speaker notified the House that Metiria Turei had indicated her desire to move, That this House take note of a matter of urgent public importance, for the purpose of debating the implications for the current negotiations with SkyCity over its bid to build the convention centre in Auckland, given the Auditor-General’s decision to inquire into the expressions of interest process for the building of a convention centre.

The Speaker informed the House that he had declined the application.

The Speaker also informed the House that he had accepted an application to debate a matter of urgent public importance.

Andrew Little moved, That the House take note of a matter of urgent public importance, for the purpose of debating the resignation of the Chair of ACC, and the resignations of the Chief Executive, the Deputy Chair of ACC, and a director.

The motion lapsed.

Rt Hon Winston Peters moved, and the question was proposed, That the House take note of miscellaneous business.

Resolved, That this House note the 70th anniversary of the arrival of United States forces in New Zealand in 1942; recall the gratitude of the New Zealand people at the protection provided by the United States while our own troops were engaged in the Middle East and Europe; and note the growing strength of political, security, and economic cooperation between our two countries today (Hon Murray McCully).
