New committee established

On 25 March the House established the Electoral Legislation Committee to consider and report to it on such legislation concerning the referendum on the electoral system, and reform to the electoral finance regime that may be referred to it. The 12 committee members are as follows: Amy Adams (Chairperson), Hon Lianne Dalziel (Deputy Chairperson), Hon Jim Anderton, John Boscawen, Hon Peter Dunne, Hon Pete Hodgson, Hon Darren Hughes, Rahui Katene, Hekia Parata, Paul Quinn, Chris Tremain, and Metiria Turei.

Primary Production Committee

  • Kevin Hague to be a member of the Primary Production Committee for the consideration of the financial review of the Walking Access Commission but without the right to vote on any question before the Committee. (SO 182 (1))

The committee did not meet this week.

Commerce

The committee met on 1 April to consider the Financial Service Providers (Pre-Implementation Adjustments) Bill. The committee also considered the 2008/09 financial review of the Public Trust, and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.

Education and Science

The committee met on 31 March to further consider the 2008/09 financial review of Landcare Research New Zealand Limited, and the New Zealand Teachers Council.

The committee will next meet on 21 April.

Finance and Expenditure

The committee met on 31 March to consider the Insurance (Prudential Supervision) Bill, and the international treaty examination of the Agreement between the Government of New Zealand and the Government of the Republic of Singapore for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income. It also heard evidence on the Report from the Controller and Auditor-General on The Auditor-General’s views on setting financial reporting standards for the public sector.

Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade

On 1 April the committee met with the Delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand from the European Parliament.

Government Administration

The committee met on 31 March to consider and deliberate on the Statutes Amendment Bill.

The committee will next meet on 21 April to consider the petition of Nathan James Ngatai and 1,050 others, and the 2008/09 financial review of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (Pouhere Taonga), and the New Zealand Fire Service Commission.

Health

The committee met on 31 March to consider the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology (Storage) Amendment Bill.

The committee will next meet on 15 April in Auckland to hear evidence on its inquiry into how to improve completion rates of childhood immunisation, and to further consider the inquiry into early detection and treatment of prostate cancer.

Justice and Electoral

The committee met 1 April to consider the Electoral (Administration) Amendment Bill, the Limitation Bill, the Search and Surveillance Bill, the Child and Family Protection Bill, and the 2008/09 financial review of the Legal Services Agency.

Local Government and Environment

The committee did not meet this week.

The committee will next meet on 21 April to hear evidence on the inquiry into the tobacco industry in Aotearoa and the consequences of tobacco use for Māori. This hearing will be open to the public.

Officers of Parliament

The committee met on 1 April to consider the 2010/11 draft budgets for the Office of the Controller and Auditor General, the Office of the Ombudsmen, and the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, and alterations to the 2009/10 appropriations for Vote Audit, Vote Ombudsmen, and Vote Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.
