Amended Answers to Oral Questions

Question No. 12 to Minister, 22 July

Hon STEVEN JOYCE (Minister of Transport) : I seek leave under Standing Order 349 to make a personal explanation in relation to a reply I gave in the House last Thursday, 22 July, in respect of the cost of subsidising passenger train services between Hamilton and Auckland.

Mr SPEAKER: Leave is sought for that purpose. Is there any objection? There is no objection.

Hon STEVEN JOYCE: Last Thursday, 22 July, I stated in reply to a supplementary question on possible passenger train services between Hamilton and Auckland: “I am doing this from memory, but my understanding is that the cost of subsidising a passenger on a train from Hamilton to Auckland is something like $15,000 or $16,000 per trip.” The answer should have been, in fact, per year, rather than per trip. But no matter which way we look at it, it remains an extraordinary amount of money per passenger. Thank you.
