Media release – Finance and Expenditure Committee

Attendance of the Chairperson of the Finance and Expenditure Committee at mid-term meeting of Australasian Council of Public Accounts Committees, 4th – 6th July 2010

The Chairperson of the Finance and Expenditure Committee, Craig Foss MP, will visit Australia from 4 – 6 July 2010 to attend the mid-term meeting of the Australasian Council of Public Accounts Committees.

Broadly speaking, the role of a Public Accounts Committee is to assist Parliament in holding the government to account for its use of public funds and resources, including through the examination of public accounts. As such, Public Accounts Committees have a critical role in ensuring public sector accountability and effective governance. The Finance and Expenditure Committee fulfils many of the Public Accounts Committee functions in New Zealand.

The Australasian Council of Public Accounts Committees aims to facilitate the exchange of information and opinion relating to Public Accounts Committees and matters of mutual concern, with a view to improving the quality and performance of Public Accounts Committees in Australasia. Membership of ACPAC is open to all Public Accounts Committees in Australasia.

Mr Foss, who chaired the last full conference of the Australasian Council of Public Accounts Committees held in Wellington in 2009, will represent New Zealand at the meeting. Other jurisdictions expected to be represented at the meeting include Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, ACT, the Commonwealth, Northern Territory, and Tasmania.

The mid-term meeting will be held at the Parliament of Tasmania, Hobart.
