Petition of Lewis Williams: Better access to cochlear implants for adults affected by disabling hearing loss

Published date: 22 Oct 2019

Petition request

That the House of Representatives increase funding of cochlear implants for adults living with disabling hearing loss, from 40 to 120 implants a year.

Petition reason

NZ has very stringent assessment criteria for access to cochlear implants, with a funding cap for only 40 adults a year. The restrictive funding means many people (currently 200 New Zealanders) meet the criteria but are unable to access implants due to the funding cap. I believe this breaches Article 25 of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which requires health services to be designed to minimise and prevent further disabilities.
