That the House of Representatives urge the Government to provide a universal basic income to all citizens and permanent residents in New Zealand throughout the COVID-19 disruption.
Whilst the wages subsidy is a good start, I believe many will be precluded from financial support given the criteria for application. The most important thing to emotional health and wellbeing is a feeling of security at a time of crisis. Financial security in terms of being able to provide food and shelter is a basic need and a fundamental right. Therefore, I feel that the provision of a universal basic income to support families throughout this time is appropriate and necessary.
