Petition of Lee Smith for New Conservative NZ Party: Allow fishmongers, butchers, and market gardeners to trade during lockdown

Published date: 1 Apr 2020

Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to allow fishmongers, butchers, and market gardeners to trade during the COVID-19 lockdown and consider their contribution to food production, availability, and its efficient delivery as an essential element of a thriving and healthy society.

Petition reason

Fresh, healthy food on NZ tables is a primary method of bolstering the nation’s over-all health, especially during times such as this when strong immune systems are required to keep people from succumbing to viral attacks. With crops already in the ground, and meat and fish already processed, these are time-sensitive commodities. These businesses must be allowed to trade, albeit with heightened sanitisation and regulated interaction with customers. This will reduce wastage.
