Published date: 30 Jul 2020

Public submissions are now being called for Arms (Firearms Prohibition Orders) Amendment Bill (No 2) Arms (Firearms Prohibition Orders) Amendment Bill (No 2)

The closing date for submissions will be determined by a later date

This bill provides new powers to the Police to make sure certain gang members don't have access to firearms, while not putting unnecessary restrictions on legal gun owners.

This bill would provide new Firearms Prohibition Orders (FPOs), which would only apply to gang members who have been convicted for firearms offences and serious violence. The commissioner of Police would have to personally sign off each FPO. People subject to an FPO could challenge this in court.

The bill will also put in place further measures to stop gang members from holding firearm licences.

FPOs will provide new powers for Police to search the persons, vehicles, and premises of specified gang members for firearms at any time.

In addition to the Bill the Committee will be considering the Report of the Attorney-General under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 on the Arms (Firearms Prohibition Orders) Amendment Bill (No 2). This report can be found under the related links panel.

The bill is available online from the 'Related links' panel.
