What will Parliament’s response be in a national emergency?

This was a question put to the Regulations Review Committee in 2015 by the Standing Orders Committee.

The inquiry focuses on formulating best-practice legislation to transition from a state of national emergency to life as normal.

Public submissions were called for in mid-2015 and that feedback is now helping shape Parliament’s response to future national emergencies, once a state of national emergency is lifted.

The committee’s interim report provides a catalogue of existing emergency powers of how Parliament responds to, and leads a recovery from, a national emergency.  It is a step towards devising a best-practice model for recovery legislation.

The inquiry is still actively being considered by the committee and will be reported back to the House.
