This week will see the conclusion of the debate on the Prime Minister’s Statement, which takes precedence over all other House business.

This week in Parliament: 15 to 19 February 2016

Parliament is back in full swing for 2016, with the week ahead featuring further debate on the Prime Minister’s Statement, which takes precedence over all other House business. Therefore, there will be no general debate this week. However, the Prime Minister’s Statement may be adjourned so the House can deal with other Government business.

This week sees the official kick-off of the parliamentary year, with the main item of business being the Prime Minister’s statement. The Prime Minister’s statement takes precedence over all other business, however, the debate may be adjourned, so the House can deal with other Government business.

After question time on Tuesday 8 March the House will be expected to debate the committee stage of the Employment Standards Legislation Bill, which makes changes to protections and benefits for employers and workers.

After question time on Tuesday 29 March, the House is expected to progress the committee of the whole House stage of the New Zealand Business Number Bill. The committee of the whole House stage follows the second reading of a bill and allows MPs to examine a bill in detail and propose changes. Following this, the House will progress the first reading debates for two bills. On Wednesday after question time there will be a general debate. Each day, the House will debate the first three or four Government orders of the day.

After question time on Tuesday 5 April, the House is expected to progress a number of Bills that are waiting to be considered by the committee of the whole House (the Environment Canterbury (Transitional Governance Arrangements) Bill, the Te Pire mō Te Reo Māori / Māori Language Bill and the Drug and Alcohol Testing of Community-based Offenders, Bailees, and Other Persons Legislation Bill). On Wednesday after question time there will be a general debate.
