‘How Parliament Works’ is designed to provide students with an introduction to the workings of the New Zealand Parliament including discussion about the structure, origins and the impact Parliament has on our lives. The information is tailored to the age and needs of the group and provides opportunity for students to ask questions specific to their curriculum focus.
The students will visit relevant venues within of Parliament Buildings.
Where possible, we can arrange for students to visit:
- a select committee room
- The Parliamentary Library
- The debating chamber of the House of Representatives
- The Legislative Council Chamber
- The Grand Hall.
- The Theaterette (Press Conferences)
How long is the programme?
‘How Parliament Works’ is a 90 minute programme. Following a brief introduction in the Education Centre students visit venues within the Parliamentary precincts. Visits can be shortened to 60 minutes on request with reduced coverage.
As part of the 90 minute programme there are the following options:
Meeting your member of Parliament
Electorate members of Parliament may be available to meet with students as their schedules allow. Let the Education Services team know if you would like to request a meeting with the electorate MP for your group as part of the visit.
The 90 minute programme can only accommodate meeting one member of Parliament per visit. If you wish to meet with MPs other than your electorate MP you will need to make these arrangements independently outside of your time booked with Education Services. You can do this by contacting the MP’s office directly.
Visit the House in session
If you want your visit to include 20 minutes sitting in the public gallery to watch the House in session make sure you book your tour on a scheduled House sitting day and note the House does not generally sit before 2pm. Let staff know at the time of booking that this is your preference. To see House sitting days use the link.
Maximum group size is 42 including adults. Larger groups can be accommodated by arranging multiple tours with a minimum of ½ hour between each group (they cannot run consecutively). Standard adult to student ratios apply.
