The first pieces from the Parliamentary Collection, a remarkable assembly of historical art and objects, are now available to view online. Everyone can now explore the fascinating stories and significant artifacts that have shaped the nation’s legislative journey.

Dating back to the 1880s, the Parliamentary Collection offers a unique insight into the current and historical workings of New Zealand’s Parliament. With over 4,500 items, the collection includes a diverse selection of objects including captivating artworks, taonga, photographs, furniture, memorabilia, monuments, statues, plaques, and shields.

You can currently view the following collections, with more to be added:

  • Artworks donated by MFAT: Pieces that were previously housed in New Zealand’s embassies, gifted to Parliament by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
  • The National Library Collection: A selection of significant historical documents and artifacts.
  • The Maslin Collection: A unique assortment of Queen Victoria-related objects, including a lock of her hair, gifted by one of her servants who emigrated to New Zealand.
  • Te Aō Marama Collection: Commissions from the 1990s by renowned Māori artists.
  • Parliamentary Shields: Photographic records of MPs since the earliest days of Parliament.
  • Heritage in Use: items from the collection that are used in the running of Parliament.
