Petition of Mike Rumrich: We need more doctors in our rural communities

Published date: 19 Dec 2019

Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to fully fund all areas of medical studies and training and require that all students work in a rural area for a minimum of five years after completing their studies.

Petition reason

I believe that there is a general lack of access to affordable and timely medical care in rural areas. I think that this is due to a lack of doctors and practitioners, especially because retiring doctors are not replaced, and that this leads to increased costs for average households, stretching budgets even further as most rural areas are suffering from lower job options and lower wages. There should be incentives for doctors to move to a rural centre or community.
